Removable dentures can be problematic, but they tend to be one of the more common solutions when a person needs to replace a lot of teeth, as other options can sometimes be too costly. In this procedure, four implants are used to support a set of permanent dentures that will replace most or all of the teeth on the bottom or the top jaw.
There are typically about four visits required to get this type of dental implants. The entire procedure can take three to six weeks, followed by a few weeks for additional healing after the procedure is completed. The first visit involves taking scans to make it possible to design and fabricate the implants and dentures. The implants are placed during the second visit and covered with a temporary denture. The third visit is to take impressions to make sure the permanent dentures will fit properly, and the fourth visit is to place these dentures on the implants, after which they’ll only be removable at the dentist’s office.
This procedure makes it possible to replace many teeth with only four implants, rather than one for each tooth. This provides a stable base for the dentures that are attached, making it so there aren’t problems with the dentures shifting throughout the day or making it difficult to talk clearly or eat. It can also be one of the more affordable options for replacing a large number of teeth, even though dental implants are typically among the higher costing alternatives for replacing a single tooth. This method for placing fixed dentures also limits the need for bone grafts due to the angled nature of some of the implants.
An all-on-4 procedure means that all the teeth are only supported by four “roots”, which can be an issue if one of these “roots” fails. The other potential issue is that some dentists don’t use higher quality materials for the final dentures, making it so they stain or fail more often. Make sure the dentist opts for porcelain or another stronger material rather than plastic for the dentures.
